CanSkate is the 'learn to skate' program for beginners of all ages and is tailored to each user group (e.g. pre-school, youth, adult). It is the only nationally standardized recognized 'learn to skate' program in Canada. It is run through sanctioned Skate Canada Clubs such as the Prince George Figure Skating Club, taught by certified Professional NCCP Skate Canada coaches and assisted by trained Program Assistants.

CanSkate emphasizes fun and continuous movement and is taught in a group lesson format. Groups have a ratio of one coach to a maximum of 10 skaters. Awards and incentives are used to motivate skaters and keep interest high.

CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada programs.The club offers a Preschool CanSkate program which is 30 minutes in length. These sessions run on the same ice times as CanSkate sessions, which are 45 minutes in length.

CanSkate Program Structure

The CanSkate Program consists of six fundamental movements – GO Forward, GO Backwards, STOP, TURN, SPIN, and JUMP – organized into six stages of learning, with an optional seventh level for skaters wishing to progress into figure skating. The skills are arranged in a progression from simple to complex. Badges are awarded once the skills are mastered. The names of the badges are: Balance, Glide Forward, Glide Backward, Edges, Power, Speed and Pre-Preliminary.

There are several options available to skaters once these skills are mastered:

  • Remain in CanSkate;
  • Transfer to hockey skating programs, CanPower, ringette programs and speed skating;
  • If the skater is interested in figure skating, the next step is Junior Academy and the Skate Canada Star Skate program. These programs further develop the skater's talent in the disciplines of Skating Skills, Interpretive, Freeskate and Ice Dance.

For CanSkate registration information, please see our policies page.

What to Wear

Clothing   Helmets   Skates
  • Mittens and gloves are a must for all skaters.
  • Long scarves, hair ornaments, gum and objects in pockets are discouraged.
  • Layer clothing to provide warmth and protection from falls. Be sure the clothing allows movement.

  • Look for helmets made of hard plastic with a thick sponge layer.
  • Helmets should be CSA approved.
  • Hockey helmets are preferred, bike helmets are acceptable because they withstand repeated bumps and protect against penetration.

  • Either figure skates or hockey skates are acceptable for CanSkate
  • Skates should provide good ankle support and the heel should fit snugly.
  • Do not buy skates that are too large, oversized skates cannot provide proper support.
