SEPTEMBER 2025 REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ALL PROGRAMS.

OCTOBER 2025 - MARCH 2026 PRECAN / CANSKATE / CANPOWER REGISTRATION OPEN

ADAPTIVE, TEEN/ADULT & FIGURE SKATING REGISTRATION OPEN SOON

The STAR Program

The STAR Program is the next step in the figure skating journey.

This program follows Skate Canada’s STAR test and competition system, while also incorporating Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles. PGFSC’s STAR program is designed to provide structure, guidance, and support for skaters to reach their fullest potential—while also encouraging the development of independent work habits on and off the ice.

Lessons

The STAR Program includes a combination of:

  • Group Classes (built into registration fees)

  • Dryland/Off-Ice Sessions (built into registration fees)

  • Privately Billed Freeskate Sessions – where skaters receive instruction in:

    • Group lessons (3+ skaters)

    • Semi-private lessons (2 skaters)

    • Private lessons (1 skater)

PGFSC has a strong, collaborative coaching team, and all skaters will rotate through coaches to benefit from:

  • Diverse strengths and expertise

  • Different coaching philosophies

  • Personalized, caring attention

Each coach will bill families directly once per month for lessons given. If you need to set a lesson budget, please discuss this with the Director of Skating—we are happy to help.
➡️ Note: There is a minimum lesson budget per day skated, as lessons are a requirement for participation in the STAR Program.

Off-Ice Training

Off-ice training is a vital component of the STAR curriculum. Skaters will:

  • Train flexibility

  • Learn and strengthen on-ice positions

  • Perform targeted exercises to improve motor skills and movement patterns

Attendance at off-ice sessions is not optional—they are an essential part of your child’s development as a figure skater.

Important Information

Clothing & Equipment

To ensure safety and effective coaching, skaters must follow the clothing and equipment guidelines:

  • Clothing: Tight-fitting athletic wear or skating dresses are required. Bulky/baggy clothing, hooded jackets or sweatshirts, and jeans are not acceptable.

  • Hair: Hair and bangs must be tied back and kept off the face.
  • Skates: Skates should have strong ankle support and good toe picks. Please purchase through a proper skate shop such as Koops Bike & Skate Shop

  • Laces: Do not wrap skate laces around the ankle.

Viewing the Session

  • Parents are welcome to watch sessions from the bleachers.

  • Arena staff ask that parents do not view from the player’s benches/box.

  • Off-ice training sessions are closed to spectators due to space and to avoid distractions for both instructors and skaters.

Off-Season Skating

PGFSC offers skating year-round for STAR program skaters:

  • Fall: September

  • Winter: October–March

  • Spring: April–May

  • Summer: July–August

Each season may vary in days, times, and arena location (based on City of Prince George ice allocation).

For the best development and progress, PGFSC encourages skaters to participate in all seasons.

Competitions & Jamboree Events

STAR program skaters are eligible to participate in figure skating competitions and jamborees.

  • We recommend each participant attend a minimum of one competition during the winter season.

  • More details about competitions will be provided by your coaches (billing of fees, and coach expenses, etc).
